My boyriend and I just spent the night at Tucuman Hostel. It is a cheap place to stay in Tucuman, Argentina. It is part of a group of hostels called Ho.La. We called their 24 hour reception desk for a reservation when we got into town. We took the train to Tucuman ( lugares turisticos en tucuman )from Buenos Aires, really cheap by the way. We used Spanish to get the reservation.
Compare to the prices of the hotels in town, Tucuman Hostel is a cheap place to stay. Compare to the prices of other hostels, it was about average. We came into Tucuman on May Day, which is highly observed in Tucuman. Nothing was open, save a couple cafes, and very few hostels or hotels were picking up their phone.
Tucuman Hostel is a five peso taxi ride from the park in “el centro”. Expect to pay not quite 10 pesos from the train station or the bus station. You can walk from the bus station to Tucuman Hostel, it is about 10 blocks. The bus station has a giant supermarket if you want to pick up supplies or a snack. The train station is about 20 blocks to Tucuman Hostel.
In May the place is blissfully empty, but the limpiadora said during the busy season 45 people live here. Tucuman Hostel has hot water. There are 3 showers and three accompanying sinks for men and the same for the ladies. In a separate room there are three toilets, a bidet and another sink with soap. These bathrooms are divided by sex as well.
We got a private room for two people, which had one double bed and one single bed for 85 pesos. All private rooms at Tucuman Hostel must share a bathroom. The room was large and clean. Our room was directly off the welcome area and would be really noisy during a busy time. But after all, it is a hostel. There is another smaller private in the same area, and one more all the way in the back next to the wading pool and smoking tables.
Tucuman Hostel is within an old house with ample contained outdoor space. A number of adventure tours are available for purchase from the front desk. Coffee and bread in the morning. Two hammocks.
I recommend Tucuman Hostel, especially in the off season. It was clean, the staff was not in your way or annoyingly friendly and the price was reasonable. Chinese vegetarian restaurant within 3 blocks of the Tucuman Hostel.
